John Ferguson

John Ferguson is a Microbiologist and Infectious Diseases Physician with Hunter New England Health and a conjoint academic with the University of Newcastle, NSW. His post-graduate qualifications include a Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and he is a fellow of the RACP and RCPA.
He is currently Director of the Infection Prevention Service for Hunter New England Health and a senior staff specialist in microbiology (with Pathology NSW) and infectious diseases (Division of Medicine, John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle). He also provides support for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at the University of Papua New Guinea and the National Academy of Medical Sciences in Nepal.   
His interests include healthcare-associated infection and antimicrobial resistance and stewardship.  He is a member (formerly chairperson) of the Healthcare-associated Infection Advisory and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committees at the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare.  He was on the Writing Group for the National Antibiotic Guidelines for 12 years.
He has published over 95 articles including book chapters and reviews.
